More complexity in the ERP UX experience? Yes, but isn’t simplicity the name of the game?

Quick question for you. Do you prefer choices or being told what to do? Do you want to decide for yourself what your user experience will be or do you just want the latest upgrade, iteration to be presented to you as a fait accompli?

Sure, everyone (myself included) goes on about the consumerization of IT and the beautification of the user experience – legitimate trends to be sure – but at the end of the day we often also just want simple, practical, fit for purpose utility. Can we customize the software to our own needs and add or remove complexity if we so choose? Because that sounds like a winning formula to me.

Let us choose for ourselves how much we zoom out or drill down to the figures and graphs and what buttons and tabs we have visible on screen. After all, I am the one who is going to be using it, right? The wave towards personalization is good as long as it gives me more format and data control – not less.

I don’t think the user experience should be either too simple OR too complex. We all want choices –  the power to choose and execute on our preferences as a guiding criterion. It just needs to work for you at the end of the day (or week, or year for that matter).

Closer to home and in celebration of empowering our users experience with customizable choices we are now working on enriching and deepening our own SYSPRO user’s experience.
