Boss Design was experiencing lengthy lead times and high volumes of waste, primarily as a result of manual spreadsheets and outdated systems. To best manage its rapid growth, the company needed to raise the standard of its operational and manufacturing practices.
Boss Design is a leading manufacturer of contract seating, while its KDMAC division manufactures an exclusive, diverse portfolio of task, operator, reception and meeting room seating. An extensive change program, including the introduction of SYSPRO, has contributed to the success of both sides of the business.
Both production sites now run SYSPRO rather than the previous mixture of PC packages for accounting, sales and manual production control systems. Boss Design elected to start afresh, using SYSPRO to push through important changes. For example, SYSPRO is used as the foundation for previously non-existent IT solutions such as a Quality Management System, and to develop a whole new way of working. The management team took great care to provide ample training and communications to help staff adapt to the new environment. The 12 months spent setting up the system and new processes paid off, with staff quickly becoming comfortable with SYSPRO.
With the core system in place, Boss focused on using SYSPRO’s flexibility to stretch its capabilities in line with evolving requirements. The learning curve is continuous, as Boss Design keeps challenging its business rather than settling for the standard SYSPRO package.
Boss Design is seeing a significant return for its efforts. SYSPRO’s sales order processing and product configurator modules have eliminated a major source of wastage and mistakes, and processes are under better control. Independent satellite systems have been almost entirely replaced by Syspro undertaking the task or producing the report. This means all users have one source of the truth.
In addition to greater financial controls, the system has enabled both factories to drive increasingly lean environments based around assembly to order, minimum WIP, limited on-site raw materials stocks and on-time delivery.
The present achievements have fueled the Group’s enthusiasm for further system development. The latest move has given sales representatives access to sales order query data on their laptops via a VPN service, and this remote access may be extended to customers.
Syspro’s sales order processing and product configurator modules have eliminated a major source of wastage and errors. Throughout Boss Design’s operations, processes are better controlled and independent satellite systems have been replaced. Greater financial controls have also been developed.

Since 2002, Boss Design has been operating its 35-seat Syspro system, including the financial, manufacturing, and distribution modules. The company has now upgraded to Syspro 6.1.
