Established in 1964, Swansea Industrial Components (SIC) is a market leader in the manufacture and supply of a range of electrical and mechanical assemblies. With operations in the UK and China, the company is a global cable assembly market leader. SIC serves more than 100 customers in over 20 different sectors including medical, switchgear, lighting, heating and ventilation. It manufactures more than 14,000 product lines which are used in ambulances, medical probes, coffee machines, boilers, beer coolers and vacuum pumps.
Syspro’s extensive gap analysis service was conducted onsite by a senior Syspro specialist with an in-depth understanding of the product and SIC’s market sector. It was completed in a few days without becoming too invasive or taking people away from their everyday duties. The consultant spent time with each department to identify how Syspro was being used to support the business model and where improvements could be made. The gap analysis covered the entire business and detailed the findings in a comprehensive, easy to understand report which can be referred back to for continuous improvement.

One of the areas identified for improvement was reporting. By adding additional modules, SIC was able to take advantage of Syspro Reporting Services using Crystal Reports. This enabled SIC to generate and store all invoices, bills of materials, sales lists and financial documents in one place, eliminating high volumes of paper documents and saving time spent on manual data analysis and administration. As a company certified to ISO 14001 environmental standards, paper reduction has made a significant contribution to SIC’s green pledge.
The gap analysis also identified areas where processes could be automated to free up the workforce for more important tasks.
It ascertained that SIC could gain greater control over the input and output of sales data by using Syspro DataSwitch, a purpose-built system integration and data manipulation tool.
DataSwitch extracts data from files and databases and automatically loads it into Syspro, from where it is extracted for detailed reports and analysis. DataSwitch processes all SIC’s sales information into Syspro and provides management with a detailed report on existing orders and the company’s capacity to fulfil further orders. This saves on time previously spent analyzing data manually and has further boosted productivity.
“We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, so saving paper by processing all accounts information through Syspro is important to us. Of course, those savings also reduce costs.”
— Clive Smith, Financial Controller, Swansea Industrial Components
By addressing the gaps in its use of Syspro, Swansea Industrial Components has increased productivity and profitability thanks to higher visibility of company data and reduced administration time.
“The gap analysis that Syspro ran for us two years ago continues to make our business more efficient today. We still refer to the gap analysis report in our management meetings to identify ways to further streamline the business through better use of Syspro.”
— Clive Smith, Financial Controller, Swansea Industrial Components
Swansea Industrial Components identified a need to use Syspro to its full potential. Its objectives included cutting down on administration time and boosting productivity.
An existing Syspro user, Swansea Industrial Components wanted to confirm that it was getting the best out of the system before upgrading to the new version. Syspro performed a gap analysis to show SIC’s management team which modules were being used successfully and which were not being optimized. The gap analysis report identified areas for improvement and is being used on an ongoing basis.
