- Raj Karamchand, President, KITWE District Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) is a Zambian mining company, with head offices in Kitwe Copperbelt. The majority share holder is Glencore, a London Stock Exchange listed company. Mopani operates seven underground and one open pit mine. In addition to the mines, it runs all the associated processing plants to produce copper cathode and cobalt. The total production for 2012 is budgeted at more than 230 000 tons of copper and 600 tons of cobalt.
In 2010 MCM reviewed its business systems to expand functionality and deployment within the organization. After evaluating a number of ERP vendors to identify a comprehensive solution that would satisfy all its requirements while being easy to operate and cost effective, MCM selected SYSPRO in early 2011 with iPlan as implementation partner. Implementation started on 1 June 2011.
Using SYSPRO Workflow Services (SWS), a solution was designed to control all transactions for more than 100 different business processes across 39 production units, with 2 260 different cost centers, in all geographical areas. SWS enforces business and corporate governance rules, and prompts various users for input when required. The workflow is seamlessly integrated with the core SYSPRO ERP functionality as well as Microsoft Outlook.
The business processes were grouped under:
- Finance - core financial processes including accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury, assets and capital expenditure
- Supply - inventory, warehousing, service and contract management, purchasing and expediting
- Production - production planning, material usage control, production control and shipping
Using SYSPRO Process Modeling, process, user interface requirements and integration points were identified and mapped. The interface was defined using the normal SYSPRO client or web interface. Where needed, integration was achieved through .net business objects, ensuring each operator has a single interface for all transactions.
The project team trained more than 700 users on the workflow and ERP solution. On go live, existing transactions were migrated. MCM went live with a 'big bang' approach, with all users starting to use the system on 4 March 2012.
The solution settled down within the first two months, with the complete project being delivered on time and within budget. Both the Zambian Revenue Authority and the Zambian Chamber of Commerce have commended Mopani for improvement brought about by the project.
Karamchand, President of the KITWE District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, comments: "The Kitwe Chamber of Commerce and Industry is proud to be associated with Mopani and this new initiative which will level the playing field for our members. With continued improvement and engagement, our members will derive many benefits from the new system. We commend Mopani for taking the leading role in improving the business environment, ultimately resulting in improvements to employment creation and the general standard of living in the Copperbelt".
